Remove the Shipping and Tax Block from Magento 1 Checkout

A short note pointing to a video on removing the shipping and tax block from the Magento 1 checkout page, plus what to check first.

Written

From my Linux study notes, 2013. Some commands and versions here are old, so please reuse them carefully. Anything marked "added later", and the notes at the end, explain what has changed since.

(Added later.) This post is for Magento 1. Magento 1 reached end of life on 30 June 2020 and no longer receives security updates. These notes do not apply to Magento 2 / Adobe Commerce.

How to remove the shipping and tax block from the checkout page

Guys, visit this YouTube video for the solution:

Notes for today

  • Back up first. In Magento 1, changes to the look of the cart and checkout pages are normally made in your theme’s layout XML or template files. Copy any file into your own theme before you edit it, rather than changing the core base/default files, so an upgrade does not overwrite your change.
  • Clear the cache after any layout change (Admin > System > Cache Management), or the old layout will keep showing.
  • Think before hiding it. If your shop charges shipping or tax, customers still need a way to see those costs before they pay. Hiding the block changes only what is shown; it does not change how shipping or tax is calculated.
  • Magento 1 is no longer supported. For a live shop, move to a supported platform such as Magento 2 (Magento Open Source / Adobe Commerce) and follow the documentation for your version.
